A modern design woven with tradition, these colourful hemp coasters are decorated with sparkling disks made from upcycled drinking cans and are inspired by the traditional hats of the Akha people of Laos.
The coasters are lined with the Lao seed of job that symbolises good luck, and would add a special touch to any table setting making a unique gift.
Founded in 2000 by Englishwoman Joanna (Jo) Smith and Laotian Veomanee (Veo) Douangdala, Ock Pop Tok has grown from a small shop selling only a few designs, to becoming one of the most important textile and artisanal institutions in all of Laos and South East Asia.
The Ock Pop Tok (which means “East meets West” in Lao) initiative provides livelihoods for hundreds of artisans in and around Luang Prabang.
For many women, weaving is only something they can work on in their free time. The goal has been to find a way to make it a sustainable source of income for as many women as possible.
What started with 5 weavers has grown to working with more than 500 artisans throughout Laos. Through Village Weaver Projects (a series of initiatives that create economic opportunities for artisans in rural locations) they help develop ranges of handicrafts that combine craftsmanship and tradition with artistic creativity and market knowledge.
Their team of weavers, dyers, designers and tailors transfer their skills to aid artisans to make a better living from handicrafts.
Combining a passion for these deep-rooted cultures and the handmade traditions with their business savvy, they are able to create thriving village enterprises.
