About The Coffee:
This unique speciality coffee, is named after one of the most important rivers crossing the municipality of San Juan del Rio Coco, where Source Climate Change's coffee farmers are located.
Farmers apply organic and sustainable land management practices, growing coffee alongside a mix of native trees species, to support a biodiverse environment that is home to over 100 native tree species, tropical birds and mammals.
The conservation project aims to restore degraded areas of forest at higher elevations with participating farmers growing shade grown coffee, incorporating living fences, woodlots and silvopastoral systems into their farms.
Cristina Talens is the Founder, Owner and Manufacturer of the coffee brand Source Climate Change and has over 15 years experience in ethical trading, sustainability and rainforest protection, having worked as Ethical Trading Manager for a leading Roast & Ground coffee company and alongside a network of conservation organisations developing the United Bank of Carbon. She started her working life as a human rights campaigner at Antislavery International.
She hit upon the idea of creating a gourmet coffee that would incentivise small farmers to protect primary forests. Source is today the only conservation-led coffee company which is founded to protect the world’s forests, helping customers to make direct payments for ecosystem services for every bag or tin that is sold through reforestation carbon credits. Her products are supported by the Plan Vivo Foundation, an independent standard, specifically designed to incentivise smallholders and forest-user groups to provide ecosystem services.
